What Belongs in a Church Bulletin?
A good bulletin is a week-by-week snapshot of your congregation's life. It serves visitors (who are they, what happens here?) and members (what's coming up, how do I get involved?). Keep it to 1โ2 pages. If it's growing beyond that, you're including too much.
Essential Sections
- Welcome message โ 2โ3 sentences. Warm but brief.
- Order of service โ Worship songs (if you list them), sermon title, scripture, offering
- Sermon notes section โ Leave space for congregants to write. Increases engagement and retention.
- Upcoming events โ Max 5. If you have more, prioritize.
- Prayer needs โ Optional but powerful. People read this.
- Giving information โ Website, text-to-give, offering plates
- Contact information โ Address, phone, website, staff names
Design Basics for Non-Designers
You don't need a design degree. You need three things: consistent fonts, consistent colors, and consistent structure.
- Pick two fonts: One for headings (something with personality), one for body text (readable at small sizes). Free options: Playfair Display + Open Sans, or Merriweather + Lato.
- Two brand colors: Your church's primary color + white/cream. That's it. Resist adding more.
- White space is your friend: Don't try to fill every inch. Margins matter.
Tools to Build Your Template
- Canva (Free/Pro): Best for most churches. Drag-and-drop, church-specific templates, easy weekly updates. Start with their "Church Bulletin" template and customize.
- Microsoft Publisher: If your church already uses Microsoft 365, this works well for print.
- Adobe InDesign: For larger churches with a dedicated designer. Professional results, steep learning curve.
- Google Slides/Docs: Free, collaborative, good enough for simple digital bulletins.
Step-by-Step: Building in Canva
- Go to canva.com โ Create a design โ Search "church bulletin"
- Pick a template that fits your style (you'll change most of it)
- Replace placeholder text with your church name, address, service times
- Set your brand colors: Brand Kit โ Add your hex codes
- Replace placeholder fonts with your two chosen fonts
- Set up sections with consistent headers (bold, slightly larger, your accent color)
- Save as a template by duplicating the design before each week's edits
The 30-Minute Weekly Update Workflow
Once your template exists, updating it should take under 30 minutes:
- Duplicate last week's file (never edit the original template)
- Update date and sermon title/scripture (5 min)
- Update order of service โ worship songs, etc. (5 min)
- Refresh events section โ remove past events, add new ones (10 min)
- Update prayer needs if you include them (5 min)
- Export as PDF + digital format if needed (5 min)
Digital vs. Print Bulletins
More churches are going digital-only or hybrid. Digital bulletins reduce printing costs and allow last-minute updates. If you go digital, make sure your order-of-service is visible on the screens and your visitors can easily access the digital version (QR code at the door works well).
Don't abandon print entirely if your congregation skews 50+. Many older members still prefer something in their hands.
