Bible Verses for Gratitude

Gratitude in Scripture is not a mood — it is a discipline, a command, and a posture of the soul that recognizes God as the source of every good gift. Thanksgiving redirects attention from what is lacking to what has been given.

How to Use These Scriptures

Each verse below includes its full text, the Bible translation used, and a paragraph of context explaining what it means and why it matters for those facing gratitude. Read slowly. Some verses will land more than others — return to those. Consider writing one in a journal or memorizing it for moments when you need it most.

1
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18
NIV
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
"Give thanks in all circumstances" is one of Scripture's more demanding commands — not for all circumstances (as if suffering is good) but in them. The distinction is crucial: gratitude is possible in suffering because it is rooted in God's character and not in circumstances. Paul identifies this as "God's will" — not a suggestion.
2
Psalm 100:4–5
NIV
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Thanksgiving is here a posture of approach to God — not something done after entering His presence but the mode of entry itself. The ground for gratitude is stated simply and thoroughly: God's goodness, enduring love, and generational faithfulness.
3
Colossians 3:17
NIV
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
"Whatever you do" encompasses everything — eating, working, speaking. Paul envisions a thoroughgoing gratitude that pervades ordinary life, not just formal worship moments. Doing everything "in the name of Jesus" means doing it as His representative, with His character expressed.
4
Philippians 4:6
NIV
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
"With thanksgiving" is the unusual ingredient in this anxiety prescription. Gratitude is not reserved for answered prayers — it accompanies the requests themselves. Giving thanks before the answer arrives is an act of pre-emptive trust in God's goodness.
5
James 1:17
NIV
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
James grounds gratitude theologically: every good thing is a gift from God. This reframes possessions, relationships, health, and abilities as gifts received rather than achievements earned. The unchanging nature of the Giver ("does not change like shifting shadows") means His generosity is permanent.
6
Psalm 107:1
NIV
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.
This refrain appears multiple times in Psalm 107 after accounts of rescue from different crises. Gratitude emerges from remembering what God has done — it is historically grounded, not emotionally manufactured.
7
Luke 17:15–16
NIV
One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus's feet and thanked him — and he was a Samaritan.
Only one of ten healed lepers returned to give thanks — and he was the outsider. Jesus noticed the absence of the other nine. Gratitude is not automatic even among those who receive the most. This passage implicitly calls believers to be among those who return.

Common Questions About Scripture & Gratitude

What does the Bible say about gratitude?

1 Thessalonians 5:18 commands gratitude "in all circumstances." Colossians 3:17 extends it to every word and deed. James 1:17 grounds it theologically in God as the giver of every good gift. Biblical gratitude is not a feeling to be waited for but a discipline to be practiced.

Is thankfulness commanded in the Bible?

Yes. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says "give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will." Colossians 3:15–17 commands thankfulness three times in quick succession. It is among the most repeated positive commands in the New Testament.

How do I practice gratitude when life is hard?

Philippians 4:6 models giving thanks within prayer — even before answers arrive. Psalm 107 practices gratitude through the discipline of remembering what God has done in the past. Gratitude in hard seasons is not denial of difficulty but deliberate redirection of attention to what God has provided.
