Attendance Growth Calculator

Enter your current attendance, growth goal, and timeframe. See the required monthly growth rate, projected milestones every 3 months, and a visual growth curve.

Church attendance growth is both a spiritual and a mathematical reality. Prayer, preaching, and community drive it — but so do visitor follow-up rates, attrition patterns, and size-threshold dynamics that every growing church eventually faces. Understanding your church's growth math helps you see where to focus energy: Are you bringing enough visitors in? Are you retaining them? Are you losing people out the back door faster than you realize?

This free attendance growth calculator lets you input your current attendance, monthly visitor rate, retention percentage, and attrition rate — and then projects your 12-month attendance trajectory. It's useful for planning staff hires, service additions, facility decisions, and outreach budget discussions. No account required.

How to Project Church Attendance Growth

This calculator uses a compound growth model based on three variables: how many new visitors you attract each month, how many of those visitors become regular attenders, and how many current attenders leave. The net effect compounds over time — small changes in retention rate have outsized long-term impact.

The projection assumes your visitor rate and retention rate remain constant. In practice, growth is non-linear — churches often plateau at certain size thresholds (65, 125, 350, 1,000) that require structural changes to break through. Use this projection as a directional guide, not a guarantee.

What is a realistic monthly visitor rate for a healthy church? +
A healthy growing church typically sees 3–7% of its current attendance come through the door as new visitors each month. If you're below 2%, you may have an outreach or visibility problem. Above 10% with low retention suggests a systemic connection problem — people visit but don't stay.
What's a good visitor retention rate? +
National church data suggests the average retention rate is 20–35%. Churches with strong first-time visitor follow-up programs, clear next steps, and small group integration typically see 35–50% retention. Your first-contact follow-up within 48 hours is the single highest-leverage retention activity.
Why do churches plateau at certain attendance levels? +
Church growth researcher Lyle Schaller identified natural "size thresholds" where growth slows: around 65, 125, 350, and 1,000 weekly attendance. These plateaus happen because the church's structure, communication style, and pastoral approach needs to change at each size. Breaking through often requires adding staff, launching small groups, or moving to multisite/multi-service.
How much does attrition affect growth? +
Significantly. Even at 1% monthly attrition (~12% annually), a 150-person church loses ~18 people per year from the back door. At 2% monthly attrition, that doubles to ~36. Strong community (small groups, serving opportunities, relationships) is the best attrition reducer. Knowing your back-door rate is just as important as knowing your front-door visitor rate.
